Avengers Break Reality in The Veracity Trap Portraits | Exclusive

Abrams ComicArts found success with their collaboration with Alex Ross on Fantastic Four: Full Circle. Their MarvelArts line continues with another original graphic novel set in the silver age of Marvel Comics. This latest book, The Avengers in The Veracity Trap, sends Earth’s Mightiest Heroes on a metaphysical journey beyond the boundaries of reality.

Written by Chip Kidd, with art by Michael Cho, The Avengers in The Veracity Trap opens with a battle in Asgard. Loki gets his hands on a weapon of great power and raises an army to threaten Odin’s rule. Naturally, Thor‘s teammates are happy to help him defend his home. However, when the smoke clears, the heroes find themselves facing something new to them. It is an existential threat that leaves them questioning their very existences!

The portraits below were crafted Michael Cho as warm-ups before working on the finished pages. They show something of Cho’s process and how he went about capturing the original aesthetic of the team.

The Veracity Trap honors Jack Kirby’s Avengers

Art aficionados may note an obviously distinct influence upon Cho’s artwork in The Avengers in The Veracity Trap. This is because the entire project was conceived as a tribute to comic creator Jack “The King” Kirby. Chiefly renowned as one of the greatest innovators in American comic art, Kirby has more recently come to be recognized for his work as a writer and character creator.

“I’ve always held a special spot in my super-hero loving heart for the Avengers,” noted Cho. “Especially the early Marvel Age comics they appeared in. (This book) is a tribute to the wonder, the delight, and the zany ‘anything could happen!’ spirit of those stories.”

The Avengers in the Veracity Trap arrives in bookstores everywhere on August 5, 2025.
