Since their formation over a year ago, The Ultimates have faced an uphill battle. While The Maker who manipulated their world is locked in stasis, they still faces his forces while liberating their world. However, Ultimates #12 by Deniz Camp and Juan Frigeri reveals that one member of the team has turned traitor.

Ultimates #12 opens in the headquarters of HAND. The Ultimate Universe equivalent of SHIELD, HAND acts to keep all superpowered beings under control and hidden from the general public. The Nick Fury of this world is the leader of HAND, though he’s been brainwashed repeatedly to remain a “good soldier.”

The opening scene reveals that one member of The Ultimates has turned traitor. They report to Fury on a recent meeting of the team, which unfolds in flashback as the issue continues. While the team almost came to blows over Doctor Doom working behind their backs, they finally reaffirmed their commitment to overthrowing The Maker.
Wasp has betrayed the Ultimates
The final pages of the issue reveals the traitor to be Wasp. Shrunken small enough to fit in the palm of Nick Fury’s hand, she asks Fury to confirm their agreement. It appears she agreed to betray her teammates in exchange for a full pardon for herself and her husband, Hank Pym.

The revelation that Wasp betrayed The Ultimates is somewhat surprising. In the Earth-616 reality, Janet Van Dyne is one of the team’s most enthusiastic members. In most incarnations, she’s usually the founding Avenger who most revels in being a superhero. This shows how much things have changed in the new Ultimate Universe. However, it’s also entirely possible that her apparent turn to the dark side is part of a plan.
