DC Retcons Green Lantern John Stewart’s Romance With Hawkwoman

The romance between Hawkwoman and the Green Lantern John Stewart was one of the most powerful subplots of the DC Animated Universe. Their star-crossed romance defined the most popular images of the heroes. Now, that romance is being teased as canon to the DC All-In timeline, in a preview of the latest Green Lantern Corps comic.

Written by Morgan Hampton and Jeremy Adams, with art by Fernando Pasarin, Green Lantern Corps #2 opens with a mission of mercy. John Stewart leads a team to inspect the ruins of the planet Thanagar. To his discomfort, the leader of Thanagar, Shayera Thal, requested him specifically.

Why this should discomfort him has yet to be revealed. However, a certain level of intimacy is teased between the two heroes. One they both struggle to conceal while trying to remain professional around the other Green Lanterns.

John Stewart/Hawkwoman romance explained

The DCAU Justice League series slowly established a romance between John Stewart and Hawkwoman across two seasons. Their relationship ended in the series finale, after Shayera Hol was revealed as a scout for a Thanagarian invasion fleet. While she betrayed her people to save the Earth, she still left the League and her Green Lantern lover behind.

Shayera rejoined the team in the Justice League Unlimited sequel series. However, her relationship with John Stewart, while professionally cordial, was still strained. It didn’t help matters that the Green Lantern met their future son while traveling in time, suggesting they would reconcile eventually.

The current family of Green Lantern comics written for the DC All-In initiative have borrowed heavily from various animated series. For instance, one story marked the comic book premiere of the character Razer. A Red Lantern who redeemed himself and became a hope-empowered Blue Lantern, Razer was originally created for Green Lantern: The Animated Series. He has now joined the Green Lantern Corps in the comics, and indeed is seen alongside John Stewart in the preview.

It remains to be seen exactly how events played out between John Stewart and Hawkwoman. Based on her body language and his reactions, it seems clear their relationship became physical. What is less clear, however, is if what happened led to a true romance put on hold.

Green Lantern Corps #2 arrives in comic shops everywhere on March 12, 2025.
