Doctor Doom now stands as Sorcerer Supreme and Emperor of Earth. This has left the former Sorcerer Supreme, Stephen Strange, in the midst of an identity crisis. Yet Doctor Strange is not one to wallow in misery. However, before he can reclaim his title, he must find an edge. He seeks that edge in Asgard, the realm of Thor, hoping to become the first Sorcerer Supreme of that magic land.
This is the ostentatious idea at the heart of Doctor Strange of Asgard.

Written by Derek Landy, with art by Carlos Magno, Doctor Strange of Asgard opens with the former Sorcerer Supreme meeting with Thor. The Allfather is sympathetic to Stephen’s plight and allows that Asgard might have need of a Sorcerer Supreme. However, he will not bestow that honor unless Stephen can meet the approval of the skalds and wizards of Asgard. Given how proud Thor’s people are in general, particularly in regard to upstarts from Midgard, that is easier said than done.

Doctor Strange faces new challenges in Asgard

The good news is that Stephen will not be without allies in his quest. The bad news is that Loki, who also once served as Sorcerer Supreme of Earth, is one of those allies. While the trickster is knowledgeable, their help is also never given freely. Another issue is that the magic of Asgard is not so easily mastered as Stephen Strange had hoped. Finally, there is a murder mystery he must solve, before he can throw himself into his studies.

“It’s been a daunting prospect, taking the reins of Doctor Strange and leading him into a new era,” Landy shared. “To follow on from the last few years of stories, which have seen huge creative leaps from astonishing creative teams, would have been a terrifying prospect were it not for Editor Alanna Smith’s primary instruction: move him to Asgard. Suddenly we’re in new territory.”
