Gargoyles: Demona Marks Comics Debut of Legendary X-Men Animator

Fans were already eagerly anticipating the upcoming Gargoyles: Demona series. The new comic from Dynamite Entertainment boasts a story by series’ creator Greg Weisman. However, the series will also feature contributions from another important figure in the evolution of Gargoyles. Dynamite confirmed the series will mark the premiere of legendary animator and director Frank Paur as a comic book artist.

Paur has a long and respected career in animation. He started out as a storyboard director in the 1980s, working on shows like Superfriends and G.I. Joe. He went on to direct many classic superhero cartoons, including Gargoyles, Batman: The Animated Series, X-Men: Evolution and The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Despite this, he has never done any comic book work, apart from a few covers. Gargoyles: Demona #1 marks Paur’s first time doing interiors on a comic.

Three unlettered preview pages from Gargoyles: Demona #1 may be viewed below.

Gargoyles: Demona also introduces new daughter of Demona

Gargoyles: Demona will explore a history the show hinted at but never detailed. Fans will recall how Demona was spared from the spell that froze most of her clan as statues for over 1000 years, yet cursed with unaging immortality. This comic will detail her activities from 994 AD onward and the quest for revenge that turned her into one of the series’ most dynamic villains.

Gargoyles: Demona will also introduce a new character; Angelika, Demona’s other daughter. Not possessing her mother’s immortality, the duo will clash as time goes by and Angelika outages her mother. By the series’ finale, fans will get to see how Angelika and Angela compare, as well as the tragedy of Demona’s life.

The Gargoyles: Demona prologue will release on Free Comic Book Day 2025.
