Kingdom Come’s Justice League Battles Darkseid in Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #24 First Look

DC has shared a sneak peek inside the upcoming 24th issue of Batman/Superman: World’s Finest by Mark Waid and Dan Mora.

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #24 flies into comic shops next month. The issue features a main cover by Mora, as well as variant covers by Dave Wilkins, Mahmud Asrar, and Sweeney Boo. It marks the fifth and final chapter of “Return to Kingdom Come,” story arc that finds the Dark Knight and the Man of Steel on Earth-22 — where Waid and Alex Ross’ acclaimed 1990s Elseworlds story takes place. At this time, DC has shared a number of unlettered preview pages — in which Batman and Superman team up with their alternate selves (and the rest of Earth-22’s Justice League) in a seemingly futile attempt to take down Darkseid.

An official synopsis for Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #24 reads as follows: “‘RETURN TO KINGDOM COME’ BY MARK WAID AND DAN MORA CONCLUDES! With no way back to their own Earth, will Superman and Batman have to witness the tragic events that led to cataclysm — or are they fated to take the place of their doppelgangers?”

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest has long been tied to Kingdom Come

Waid and Ross’ Kingdom Come originally ran as a four-issue limited series throughout mid 1996. The comic takes place in an alternate future where aged icons like Batman and Superman have fallen out of favor and been replaced in the public eye by a new generation of reckless, amoral superheroes — the biggest and baddest of them all being the one called Magog.

Since the ’90s, DC has added to Kingdom Come lore on numerous occasions — including earlier in Waid and Mora’s Batman/Superman run. 2022’s issue #7 marked the debut of Boy Thunder, Superman’s short-lived sidekick. Issue #10 soon revealed that Boy Thunder was actually destined to become Magog. Things came full circle late last year, when “Return to Kingdom Come” kicked off in Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #20.

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #24 goes on sale Tuesday, February 20 from DC.
