Ahead of the theatrical release of Insidious: Out of the Further, franchise co-creator James Wan revealed his single biggest regret from the franchise. Such a revelation comes just days before the scheduled release of the movie.
Insidious: Out of the Further will hit the theaters on August 21, 2026. James Wan is the producer of the film alongside Jason Blum, Oren Peli, and Leigh Whannell. Lin Shaye will be returning as Elise Rainier in the upcoming horror film. James Wan revealed how he regretted killing one major character in the Insidious franchise.
“Lin is the beating heart of this franchise. On the first film, we wrote the role specifically for Lin because we’d been big fans. We needed to end on a big, scary note, and that meant killing Elise,” shared Wan, per Pinkvilla, talking about Shaye’s character.
Wan, reflecting on how he regrets his decision, further added, “Needless to say, Leigh Whannell and I have regretted that decision because with every sequel we’ve made to the Insidious franchise, we’ve had to think up a clever way to keep her alive.”
Lin Shaye explains why Elise Rainier keeps evolving across Insidious films
The first film of the franchise, Insidious (2010), was directed by James Wan. Lin Shaye has continued to play Elise Rainier in the horror franchise ever since. During her interview with Pinkvilla, the 82-year-old American actress shared how she has now developed an understanding of the character after playing the role for sixteen years.
Talking about how the character evolves with every movie in the Insidious franchise, she shares, “It’s so interesting for me how I can add something about her that you learn from the circumstances of each movie. I don’t always know how I’m going to react to any particular demon; she’s always different, but Elise grows each time, even in her understanding of the demonic world.”
Shaye has played the role of Elise Rainier in five consecutive films. The character died in the first film at the Lambert family residence, and since then she has reappeared in every film as a spirit to help the family in times of crisis. Insidious: Out of the Further will be the sixth film where Shaye has reprised her role as Elise.
