Marvel Studios could reportedly have more Disney+ standalone stories in the works. A new rumor points to two mystery projects that are sure to spark widespread fan theories across the Marvel Cinematic Universe fandom.
If the reports prove accurate, the format would give Marvel another effective avenue to deliver standalone stories between its larger theatrical and streaming releases.
According to Marvel insider James Mack, two new Special Presentations are in development by Marvel Studios for 2027. One presentation is set to revolve around a single character and another around a team of characters. While specific character details, plotlines, and exact release dates remain under wraps, Marvel Studios has yet to officially confirm either project.
The reported solo and team projects could serve different MCU goals
Special Presentations have a smaller runtime compared to regular series produced for Disney+. These special presentations will help Marvel Studios explore characters that do not need an entire season of their own. The format gives directors some flexibility to experiment with storytelling and genre.
Marvel Studios launched the format with Werewolf by Night in 2022. Directed by Michael Giacchino, the black-and-white Halloween special paid homage to classic monster cinema while introducing Jack Russell, Elsa Bloodstone, and Man-Thing to the MCU.
Later that year, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special reunited Star-Lord and the Guardians for a festive adventure that also filled in key story details before Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Together, the two releases showed how the format could support very different types of Marvel stories.
Marvel has continued to build on the idea. In 2026, the studio released A Marvel Television Special Presentation: The Punisher: One Last Kill, featuring Jon Bernthal reprising his iconic role as Frank Castle following his return in Daredevil: Born Again.
This project proved that the concept of a Special Presentation would work even for gritty, street-level stories alongside Marvel’s larger crossover events.
