Adam Wingard Will Adapt Robert Kirkman’s Hardcore For Universal

In the pandemic era, no film has been bigger than director Adam Wingard’s Godzilla vs. Kong, which is why Wingard is already attached to a new Monsterverse film. Now, it looks like Wingard will add another genre project to his upcoming slate.

Deadline is reporting that Wingard has signed on to co-write and direct Universal’s adaptation of Hardcore. Will Simmons will co-write the film with Wingard.

The Hardcore comic was created by Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead, Invincible) and artist Marc Silvestri for Skybound Entertainment and Image Comics. Andy Diggle and artist Alessandro Vitti launched the first Hardcore series in 2018. Brandon Thomas and artist Francis Portela were the creative team for the follow up comic, Hardcore Reloaded.

Deadline’s description of the Hardcore film simply says that it follows “a soldier’s journey as he saves the world without getting his hands dirty.” However, that undersells the sci-fi premise of the book. Within the series, the Hardcore Program can turn anyone into a human drone. Essentially, assassins and soldiers can remotely pilot the bodies of hardcore infected people and make them do their dirty work. During the first storyline, the lead character, Agent Drake, is trapped in a body that wasn’t his own when the Hardcore Program is hijacked by an unknown enemy.

Universal hasn’t set a date for Hardcore. And it’s also unclear if Wingard will direct his next Monsterverse movie before tackling Hardcore.
