Having received a staggered opening across the globe over the previous two weeks, there was a lot of excitement on Friday when Kenneth Branagh's Thor, starring Chris Hemsworth, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston and Kat Dennings, opened in 3,955 theaters in North America including 213 IMAX screens. Paramount is now reporting an estimated $66 million for Marvel Studios' fourth feature film for its opening weekend with $6.6 million of that (roughly 10%) coming from its IMAX screenings. That's an impressive average of $16.8k per site, as well as making it the ninth-highest opening for a movie based on a Marvel character behind the three "Spider-Man" movies, two "Iron Man" films, the "X-Men" sequels and the "Wolverine" prequel. Internationally, the movie has also been an enormous hit, amassing $176 million to date in just two weeks for a worldwide total of $242 million.
