Edgar Wright Talks Ant-Man

June 29, 2010

"His suit and its power is the big gadget"

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World director Edgar Wright talked a bit more about the Ant-Man movie to Box Office Magazine:

I haven't actually started the second draft yet--I'm not going to be able to until this film [Scott Pilgrim] is out--but what we wrote for the first draft, and what Marvel really liked, is that it's funny, but it's a genre film. It's about the level of comedy that Iron Man has. The idea is to make a high-concept genre film where it's within another genre. His suit and its power is the big gadget and it takes place in the real world. I just wanted to do something that was slightly different than the superhero origin film. I felt that between that and the various mad scientist, crazy doctor films that we've all seen, this would be a way into an origin that was slightly different. I'm not really a multi-tasker--I haven't done anything since Marvel liked our first draft.

"Scott Pilgrim" hits theaters on August 13th, so if Marvel Studios and Wright are serious about the project, we could see some movement later this year. In the meantime, check out the international trailer for Scott Pilgrim below:

cool finally good news!! i am looking forward to this one!! I like the fact that the original characters are in and none left out or any added that dont belong!! i am just afraid that if one of the marvel charters has a movie that fails to produce that it might affect them all when they come together in one movie. will keep my hopes up and hope that this becomes a trend in using more than one superhero in a movie done right!!

Nobody will take Ant-man seriously anymore. I was a little annoyed to see him in Secret Avengers. Respect as an original and popular character, but this movie would need to stand alone and not in the Marvel Movie Universe. I mean, Avengers? Really? What's he gonna do? Crawl in your ear?

@Crimson
Antman can also grow to the size of a skyscraper and also with his ability to grow smaller is effective in spy situations and ability to communicate with ant like lifeforms around the area will give you a better idea of the layout and it's weaknesses

I'm hoping it's Eric O'grady movie

I'd like to see what they do with him.

I mean...either he comes out of obscurity to the general public and they like him, or it fails and he remains.

Either way it isn't a big loss.

Not to mention this guy is an Abusive woman-beater (Hank Pym)... To make it all comedic "Honey I shrunk the kids" is gonna be a disaster for Marvel Studios, because really now...when a comic movie comes out, who goes to see it more than once. Comic fans, and to completely re-write a character to make him movie apropriate is gonna murder the film and the fanbase who would see it.

Plus I really don't see that Michael Cera dweeb as Tony Stark's rival.

I could have seen this working before they established the whole Marvel Movie-verse but I just don't see how they could make this work with Avengers coming out and tying it in. I did just read a rumor though that Nathan Fillion was up for the role of Hank Pym in Avengers which would work and make sense because Joss Whedon is directingit and if they decided to have him in Ant-Man he could definitely fit because he's used to balancing the hard-egde tough guy and awkward funny moments also.
