Individual Marvel Video Game Universes Will Remain Separate

Marvel brands merchandise based on its video games as “Gamerverse,” but that doesn’t mean it’s all one universe. At the moment, the creators are interested in keeping the several video game universe separated from each other. That’s why the Spider-Man in Marvel’s Avengers won’t remember the events of the previous Spider-Man game. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Vice President and Head Of Creative of Marvel’s gaming division Bill Rosemann stated that they plan to keep the different universes separated for a while.

“Each game is in the Marvel universe, but they’re in their own reality, if you will,” he said. “Currently, our plan is to keep each game set in its own Marvel universe.” The reason behind this choice is to give game-makers as much freedom as possible to craft the stories they want.

This freedom also allows the game-makers to focus on newer, younger characters like Miles Morales in the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Kamala Khan from Avengers. In the case of the latter, the idea is that many gamers would not find it difficult to connect with her.

“She has her own internal struggles. She’s a fan of superheroes, particularly a fan of the Avengers. She’s trying to figure out who she is,” said creative director Scot Amos in the same interview. “We were like, ‘That sounds a lot like a gamer.’ Somebody who’s now in a world of change where they’re becoming a superhero, they are looking for mentors. She really did meet her heroes.”

Marvel’s Avengers will hit PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Stadia, and PC on September 4.
