Mortal Kombat Reboot Writer Confirms R-Rating, Fatalities

For those of you who are worried that the Mortal Kombat reboot will be a watered-down PG-13 affair, don’t be. It’s going to be as bloody and jam-packed with Fatalities as the video games before it.

In a post over on Twitter, Greg Russo, the screenwriter for the Mortal Kombat reboot gave fans the following message:

“Since it’s already been stated by other members of the team, I’m gonna put this one to bed. MK WILL be R-Rated and for the first time EVER, FATALITIES will FINALLY be on the big screen (and no I’m not gonna say which ones) You’ll just have to wait for the movie & see!!!”

When the original movie arrived in theaters back in 1995, it was fairly well received. However, to appeal to a wide audience, it had a PG-13 rating and lacked over-the-top gore and fatalities. Its 1997 follow-up, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, was also toned way down from the source material.

In 2011, Kevin Tancharoen’s Mortal Kombat: Legacy web series delivered a mature-themed take on the franchise. It had more realistic action, gore, and fatalities. It aired for two seasons before Machinima expressed interest in a big-screen adaptation, which eventually got cancelled.

Fortunately, Mortal Kombat’s reboot is finally getting some traction. It just saw its first confirmed casting, with The Raid: Redemption’s Joe Taslim signing on as Sub-Zero. The film may begin production later this year, and it will hit theaters on March 5, 2021.
