Star Trek is turning 60 next month, and devoted fans can help the long-running franchise set a world record. Paramount has announced a massive slate of global events, which includes a unique world-record attempt.
The anniversary events kick off on September 8, 2026, the exact date Star Trek premiered on television back in 1966. One of the highlights of the celebrations is Paramount Pictures’ attempt to break a Guinness World Record by inviting fans from across the globe to participate.
The live event will take place at the Science Museum in London on September 8. Fans can attend the free, adult-only Star Trek Lates event to participate in the “Most People Performing the Vulcan Salute Simultaneously” attempt. Online viewers will also have the opportunity to join the global record attempt digitally.
For the uninitiated, the Vulcan Salute is an iconic split-finger gesture that is often paired with the phrase “Live Long and Prosper.” Star Trek actor Leonard Nimoy invented it as a salute for the alien Vulcan species.
What new Star Trek projects are coming out soon?
Apart from the record attempt, the 60th-anniversary celebrations come with several new and returning Star Trek projects. The critically acclaimed Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which began in 2022, is concluding its fourth season on September 24. Fans can also catch advance screening on September 8 of the eighth episode, which will debut digitally two days later.
The overall show holds a 92% score, while the ongoing season has an 86% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. Paramount renewed it for a fifth season, which will serve as the finale and is scheduled to arrive in 2027.
Meanwhile, Star Trek: Scouts Season 2 will premiere on YouTube on September 8. On the same day, Star Trek: The Original Series collector’s gift box edition will be released.
Fans can also look forward to the Star Trek: Starfleet Academy exclusive preview at New York Comic Con on October 10. The panel will also feature discussion surrounding the upcoming season.
Beyond the new projects, the anniversary celebrations include newly restored 4K screenings of classic Star Trek films. These films will be released in theaters across the US from September 4 through September 8.
