Paul Bettany and James Spader have revealed how Ultron makes his surprising return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although the rogue AI was seemingly destroyed by Vision at the end of 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, the upcoming Disney+ series VisionQuest will bring the villain back in an unexpected way.
In an interview with Rotten Tomatoes TV, the Marvel actors were asked about where exactly their characters were set in their upcoming show. Bettany explained that White Vision, who lives a discreet life, goes into a “rest mode,” during which he visits a mansion-like space in his mind. This mansion is populated by different AIs created by Tony Stark, and Ultron is one of them.
The actor said, “We discover that when he [Vision] killed Ultron’s corporeal body, he actually uploaded him into his mind. And he lives in this kind of fantastic prison loft, and I go to him for advice.”
Towards the end of the second Avengers movie, Vision kills Ultron, whose goal was to achieve global peace by destroying humanity. However, VisionQuest will bring back the villain, but as an “advisor” to Bettany’s character. The actor added, “We have a sort of father-son-therapist-psychopath relationship.”
What is Marvel’s VisionQuest show about?
VisionQuest is Marvel’s new miniseries on Disney+, which is set to premiere later this year. It follows the story of White Vision, who is hiding from the authorities after the events of WandaVision.
There is a bounty on Vision’s head, and many are looking for him, including Paladin. Among all the chaos, the synthezoid must reclaim his memories and humanity by interacting with other Tony Stark-created AI personas like F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H., Dum-E, and U.
Alongside Bettany and Spader, the ensemble cast includes T’Nia Miller, Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, James D’Arcy, Orla Brady, Emily Hampshire, and Ruaridh Mollica. Terry Matalas serves as showrunner. VisionQuest will mark the end of the trilogy that began with WandaVision, followed by Agatha All Along.
VisionQuest consists of eight episodes and will premiere on Disney+ on October 14, 2026.
