The doomed Squirrel Girl MCU TV show has surfaced long after it was canceled nearly a decade ago. The live-action project was sometimes termed Marvel’s own version of the hit sitcom The Office. However, the ambitious show never saw the light of day until this week.
One of the cast members from the canceled Squirrel Girl TV series, New Warriors, Derek Theler, recently shared an Instagram post. He revealed exclusive, never-before-seen footage from the show and multiple set photos. They featured actress Milana Vayntrub, who was set to play the title character Doreen Green/Squirrel Girl.
Theler also wrote an emotional message while recalling what it was like shooting his first-ever MCU project alongside other cast members. “At the height of Marvel’s epic Infinity Saga run, we shot a comedy about a b-level superhero team tasked with protecting Cleveland, Ohio: The New Warriors.”
The main characters of New Warriors were Squirrel Girl, Night Thrasher, Speedball, Microbe, Debrii, and Mr. Immortal. Theler described the show as “Marvel meets The Office.”
He added, “We shot the pilot, got picked up for the season, and genuinely thought we had something special. Then… we waited. Eventually, the show disappeared into Hollywood limbo. No dramatic cancellation. No real explanation. We just never came back.” While they weren’t supposed to take pictures on the set, Theler still captured a lot of BTS moments.
While concluding his message, Theler did get a little hopeful for New Warriors’ return while hilariously making an Avengers: Doomsday reference. “I hear the Avengers have a Doom problem on their hands. If they need backup, I know a team…”
What else do we know about the canceled New Warriors TV show with Squirrel Girl?
Besides Milana Vayntrub and Theler, the canceled Squirrel Girl MCU TV show New Warriors also featured Jeremy Tardy as Dwayne Taylor/Night Thrasher, Calum Worthy as Robbie Baldwin/Speedball, Matthew Moy as Zack Smith/Microbe, and Kate Comer as Deborah Fields/Debrii.
The main concept of the mockumentary show, as described by Theler, focused on “a group of young adults with superpowers trying to figure out how to actually become superheroes, all while being followed by a documentary camera crew.”
When it was originally announced, New Warriors was supposed to be a half-hour comedy series with a total of 10 episodes.
It was set to arrive on the Freeform platform but it later dropped the project. Disney couldn’t find a new home for the show and it eventually died a slow death with no substantial updates on its future.
Earlier this year, Vayntrub expressed her honest thoughts on New Warriors’ cancellation. “It was a collapse of timing and corporate restructuring. Marvel, Hulu, and Disney were becoming one, and lots of shows and people got lost in the shuffle. It was honestly a great show. Ahead of its time. You would have loved it.”
