Lanterns Release Date Window Delay Explained by DC Studios Head

DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran has finally opened up about the recent delay with the release date window of DC Studios’ newest HBO show, Lanterns. The DC Universe series was originally scheduled to debut in early 2026. However, HBO boss Casey Bloys recently confirmed that Lanterns’ series debut has been officially delayed to the end of summer 2026.

What is the reason for Lanterns’ delay?

During a recent interview with CBR, Safran explained the reason why the creative team decided to delay the release date of Lanterns, revealing that they’re just making sure that the show will launch and be promoted at the right time.

“It was about when it made sense for it to be released, so (HBO Max) could get the right lead in, the right promotion,” Safran said. “Because it’s an important show for everybody, and the show is going to be great. It was about the right timing, so it’s going to be… It’s late summer. But there’s a reason for it.”

The show will be led by Aaron Pierre as recruit John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Lantern legend Hal Jordan. They will be introduced as two intergalactic cops, who get drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland. Joining them are Kelly MacDonald as Kerry, Garret Dillahunt as William Macon, Poorna Jagannathan as Zoe, Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, Chris Coy as Waylon Sanders, Jasmine Cephas Jones as young Bernadette, Sherman Augustus as John Sr., J. Alphonse Nicholson as a young John Sr., Jason Ritter as Billy Macon, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Nicole Ari Parker as Bernadette, Sherman Augustus as John Sr. and more

Lanterns is executive produced by showrunner Chris Mundy (True Detective: Night Country, Ozark), Damon Lindelof (The Leftovers, Watchmen), and Tom King (Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow), with the latter two also co-writing the series. According to Mundy, the show will take place in “a couple of different time periods.” The directing line-up consists of James Hawes, Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov.
