Lena Headey Reveals Her Ideal Ending for Game of Thrones’ Cersei: ‘They Made Other Choices’

Lena Headey wanted Game of Thrones’ finale to include a showdown between Cersei and Arya Stark.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Headey was asked if she had an ideal storyline for Cersei in the final season of HBO’s Game of Thrones. Headey previously told The Guardian in 2019 that she “wanted a better death” for Cersei and that she was “kind of gutted” about the character’s final moments on the show.

Headey answered, “I think all of us did, to be honest, because you start trying to write the story yourself. And [Maisie Williams] and I would fantasize about a Cersei and Arya showdown; that she would come back as Jaime. That was our dream. But they made different choices.”

When asked if she misses working on Game of Thrones, Headey answered, “No. I miss the people — because you fall in love with people, and you create these family units. So that takes a little while to go through. There’s a weird grief from those relationships. But I don’t miss it. We did it. We put everything into it. It changed everyone’s f—king world, and we’ll always have it.”

Headey also said she has not watched the first season of HBO’s House of the Dragon, which serves as a prequel series set approximately 200 years before the events of Games of Thrones, because it’s “too weird” for her to watch.

What happens to Cersei at the end of Game of Thrones?

In the final episode of Game of Thrones, King’s Landing is attacked by Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke). While taking shelter from the attacks, Cersei is discovered by her brother, Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), and the two embrace one another before being crushed by falling debris. Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) later learns about this and then denounces his loyalty to Daenerys due to his grief.
