Netflix Reveals the First Image From Kong: Skull Island Animated Series

MonsterVerse fans will need more than one streaming service to keep up with all the Titan activity that Legendary has in the works. During today’s leg of Netflix’s Geeked Week, the streaming service teased a number of upcoming animated projects, including a new anime series based on Kong: Skull Island. They also revealed the first official photo from the series, which you can view below.

Netflix previously announced Skull Island back in January. Powerhouse Animation, the same studio behind Castlevania and Blood of Zeus, is producing the show. The story reportedly follows the members of a shipwrecked crew who find themselves stranded on the titular island, where they run afoul of several terrifying monsters, including Kong himself. The series will share continuity with Legendary’s big-screen MonsterVerse projects. But for now, we still don’t know if it takes place before or after the film that inspired it.

The new image doesn’t reveal much. In fact, it only gives us a bird’s-eye view of two people kneeling in the middle of one of Kong’s giant handprints. Regardless, it implies that the series will be leaning into some of the horror elements that made the original Skull Island a success in 2017. Aside from Kong, we can also probably expect appearances from the army of reptilian Skullcrawlers that appeared in the film as well.

Right now, Legendary is actively developing a sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong, with Adam Wingard returning to direct. The studio is also working on another live-action MonsterVerse series for Apple TV+ with Matt Shakman (WandaVision) helming the first two episodes.

Netflix still hasn’t announced a release date for Skull Island.
