She-Hulk Director Teases the Series’ ‘More Comedic’ Tone

All of Marvel’s shows on Disney+ have managed to blend several different genres together. But it sounds like the studio’s highly-anticipated She-Hulk series will be primarily geared toward generating laughs. While speaking to The Wrap, director Kat Coiro explained how Jennifer Walters’ upcoming live-action debut will be more of a straightforward comedy than other recent MCU projects.

She-Hulk’s emphasis on humor isn’t a big surprise. Kevin Feige previously described the series as a “half-hour legal comedy” in 2020, and it also helps that Coiro herself comes from a sitcom background. Over the years, she has helmed episodes of shows like Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Girls5eva, and she recently directed the new Jennifer Lopez rom-com Marry Me. However, Coiro insists that She-Hulk’s lighthearted tone isn’t what convinced her to come aboard.

“I never choose a project based on genre,” said Coiro. “And I actually don’t think very much about genre, I think about character. And I think about the emotional lives of the characters and, you know, can I bring something? Can I bring a mix of humor and heart to this? Because that is what I love to watch. And it’s what I love to work with. And so when I stepped into, you know, the Marvel playground — the cool thing about Marvel is that it is an ever-evolving universe and you have straight dramas, and you have very comedic films, and we are in that world where we’re definitely playing with a more comedic world, but it also is still part of Marvel land.”

Marvel fans got their first glimpse at She-Hulk during last fall’s Disney+ Day event. Unfortunately, the sizzle reel stopped short of giving us a complete look at Tatiana Maslany as the titular Jade Giantess. But with Marvel’s Moon Knight series right around the corner, hopefully some new footage can’t be far behind.

Disney+ still hasn’t announced a release date for She-Hulk.
