Star Trek: Discovery, Strange New Worlds, & Lower Decks Get Early Renewals

While Star Trek: Discovery is currently on hiatus from its fourth season, its future is assured. Paramount+ has renewed the series for a fifth season. Additionally, Paramount+ offered a vote of confidence in the new spinoff series, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, by renewing it for season 2 ahead of its premiere later this year. The animated comedy series, Star Trek: Lower Decks, has also been renewed for a fourth season.

Star Trek executive producer Alex Kurtzman released a statement to celebrate the news.

“Four years ago, we made a promise to grow Star Trek into something it had never been before, and thanks to the incredibly hard work done by our many talented showrunners, writers, and directors, along with the extraordinary support of CBS Studios and Paramount+, we’re keeping our word,” said Kurtzman. “Now our current shows are set up for the future as we work to build Trek’s next phase of programming for years to come.”

Paramount+ previously announced that Discovery season 4 will resume on Thursday, February 10. But the new announcement is that Star Trek: Picard season 2 will premiere on Thursday, March 3. A third season of that series was greenlit last year, and it will likely resume production soon after its recent COVID outbreak.

Following the end of Picard season 2, the series premiere of Strange New Worlds will take place on Thursday, May 5. Beyond that, only Lower Decks season 3 is on the schedule for this summer. However, four new episodes of Star Trek: Prodigy will stream starting on Thursday, February 3.  The remaining ten episodes of Prodigy season 1 will premiere later this year at a currently undisclosed date.
