The Witcher Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich Teases the Third Season

Thanks to COVID-19-related delays, there were two years between The Witcher season 1 and the upcoming second season. Hopefully it won’t take as long to get the third season up and running. Via Gamespot, The Witcher showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich briefly addressed the show’s future at the Lucca Comics and Games Convention in Italy. While it sounds like the third season is still being written, Schmidt did mention a few details.

“What I will say about the third season is, the writers are back in Los Angeles diligently working,” said Hissrich. “We keep using the word bigger. Our friends at Netflix are like, ‘Please make this.’ It’s a really fun season. And it follows a particular book very closely, has a lot of action, some death.”

Hissrich purposefully declined to mention which of The Witcher novels she was referring to. Regardless, it appears that season 3 won’t go before the cameras until sometime in 2022.

However, there won’t be a large gap of time before a new Witcher series appears on Netflix. Last summer, the live-action prequel series, The Witcher: Blood Origin, began filming. The story takes place 1,200 years before Geralt’s time. This limited series will feature Laurence O’Fuarain, Michelle Yeoh, Sophia Brown, Lenny Henry, Mirren Mack, Nathaniel Curtis, Dylan Moran, Jacob Collins-Levy, Lizzie Annis, Huw Novelli, Francesca Mills, Amy Murray, and Zach Wyatt. Additionally, Netflix is developing another Witcher spinoff for younger audiences.

The Witcher season 2 will hit Netflix on December 17.
