Warning: There are spoilers ahead for the eighth episode of What If…?
Is there more than one Uatu in the multiverse? The Watcher seemed to be surprised to see the Infinity Stone-powered Ultron in last week’s episode of What If…?. However, this week’s installment made it clear that the Watcher has some history with this Ultron, and it nearly killed him.
The eighth episode of What If…? has hit Disney+, and we want to know what the Superhero Hype community thinks about it! This post is a place for all of you to leave your own reviews, thoughts, or anything else you want to say about What If…? season 1 episode 8.
In a darker outcome from Avengers: Age of Ultron, the Vision’s body was never stolen by the Avengers. Instead, Ultron used it as he originally intended by downloading himself into Vision’s form. He then proceeded to kill Thor, Cap, and Iron Man before also launching a nuclear attack all over the world. Additionally, Thanos had the misfortune of encountering Ultron for a moment…right before he was split in two by the Mind Stone. Ultron then stole the remaining five Infinity Stones and became a cosmic god.
Ultron also went on a rampage across the universe and wiped out every living being. Unfortunately for everyone, Ulron heard the Watcher narrating his story and became aware of the multiverse as well.
Back on Earth, Black Widow and Hawkeye were the only heroes to escape Ultron’s extinction event. At Black Widow’s insistence, they traveled to Russia to find a weapon against Ultron buried in the Russian archives. The Watcher almost violated his non-interference oath to help them find Arnim Zola, the former Hydra scientist turned artificial intelligence. However, Black Widow found the file before Uatu could act.
Black Widow and Hawkeye located the Zola program and convinced it to help them. Concurrently, Ultron invaded the Watcher’s inner sanctum. The Watcher put up a good fight. Regardless, he was over-matched. On Earth, Hawkeye downloaded Zola into an Ultron drone and sacrificed himself to facilitate their survival. But because Ultron was no longer in their universe, Black Widow couldn’t use Zola against him.
Ultron came very close to killing Uatu, which forced the Watcher to flee. In the aftermath, Uatu reluctantly approached the dark Doctor Strange (or Strange Supreme) for his help.
