Now that its two leads have been cast, HBO can look ahead to when filming can start on its highly-anticipated adaptation of The Last of Us. And according to the Director’s Guild of Canada, the series’ start date is only a few months away. CBC brings word that the show will get underway in the Great White North starting in July.
Production on the series officially begins on July 5. Additionally, it sounds like Calgary will stand in for at least one location from Naughty Dog’s original video game, which took players everywhere from Boston to Salt Lake City. Craig Mazin, who’s writing the series alongside Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann, has previously said that the series will “expand” on the game’s story. So it’s also possible that the show will feature new cities that players didn’t get to visit themselves.
Surprisingly, the report also notes that filming won’t conclude until June 8, 2022. It goes without saying that this is a rather extensive production schedule. Especially since one of its leads, Pedro Pascal, already has another high-profile gig on Disney+’s The Mandalorian. However, Pascal signed a “first-position” deal when he came aboard The Last of Us. This essentially means that the new show takes priority over his adventures in the Star Wars universe.

Former Game of Thrones actress Bella Ramsey is co-starring on the series as the games’ secondary protagonist, Ellie. Picking up 20 years after a mutated fungal strain began turning humans into ravenous creatures known as the Infected, the story centers on Joel (Pascal), who is tasked with escorting 14-year-old Ellie across the country in the hopes that she holds the key to humanity’s salvation.
Beanpole director Kantemir Balagov is helming The Last of Us’ pilot episode. HBO has yet to announce a premiere date for the series.
