Barbara Gordon was originally part of the live-action Titans series when it was pitched to TNT. However, she was left out of the first two seasons on DC Universe. Regardless, Barbara will finally debut in the series’ upcoming third season. Now, Variety is reporting that actress Savannah Welch has joined the cast of Titans as Commissioner Barbara Gordon.
In both the comics and the show, Barbara was once Batgirl and the lover of Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites). But in a departure from the comics’ lore, Titans‘ Barbara followed in her father’s footsteps after she was crippled by the Joker. The report notes that Barbara “has a combative relationship with Bruce Wayne.” It also states that Dick’s return to her life will rekindle “their old romance and [start] a new crime fighting partnership.”
Yvonne Craig portrayed Barbara Gordon in the ’60s Batman TV series, while Dina Meyer played Barbara/Oracle in the Birds of Prey television show. However, Welch is the first disabled actress to play the character. Welch lost one of her legs in a 2016 accident, and she went on to become a spokesperson for the disabled community.
Welch’s previous roles include History Channel’s Six, as well as the films Boyhood and Tree of Life.
Titans season 3 is currently in production. However, HBO Max hasn’t set a premiere date for season 3 yet.
