Starting this year, His Dark Materials fans will get the chance to have their own daemon, at least virtually. HBO has debuted (via Variety) the brand new AR app called His Dark Materials: My Daemon. The app comes for Apple iOS devices and Apple Watches, and it will allow a user to connect with their daemon, the animal companion that is the embodiment of one’s soul.
While it’s not clear if users can create their daemon or simply receive it, the app will feature 80 unique combinations of animal, personality, and coloration. On top of that, each animal has some cute and unique animations to unlock. Thanks to the fact that each animal is exquisitely rendered in 3D and AR, users can place their daemon in the real world. Besides using the daemons’ animations to react to the surroundings, fans can also share photos and videos of their daemon with friends. And the daemon encourages users to stay well, syncing with other fitness, sleep, and meditation apps.
HBO has also released a short His Dark Materials: My Daemon launch trailer for the app. You can watch it in the player below.
It appears that the app will also allow fans to earn some AR badges by exploring His Dark Materials worlds and doing curated tasks. They will have the chance to meet some of the iconic characters from the series like Iorek, the witch Serafina Pekkala, Lee Scoresby, and many others.
Currently, the app is available in the U.S., Canada, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, and Finland. Fans can download it from the store. Unfortunately, it’s only for iOS and not Android.
His Dark Materials Season 2 has already debuted in the UK on Nov. 8. US fans will have to wait until Nov. 16 to see it on HBO and HBO Max. Season 2 will adapt The Subtle Knife from book to screen.
