The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is ‘Reinventing’ Early MCU Characters

There are a few supporting characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe who are overdue for a reappearance. And according to writer Derek Kolstad, that’s exactly what’s going to happen in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Viewers can expect to see a few tertiary players from the MCU’s early days show up on the upcoming Disney+ series.

Kolstad shared this bit of info while appearing on the Script Apart podcast (via Collider). He also teased that the characters they are including will have more depth and dimension this time around.

“[The show is] going to be f***ing cool,” said Kolstad. “I’m very proud of and honored by what it came to be. Here’s what I’ll say: growing up, everyone would give someone like [Batman character] Robin s***. But Robin’s pretty badass, and became pretty badass in the comics. Taking secondary characters and putting them in the primary roles, and they’re cooler. They’re more interesting.”

“There’s more humanity, more longing, more suffering, and coming to grips with who and what they are,” continued Kolstad. “What I will say is that there are characters from the earliest Marvel movies that are coming back. We’re layering them in and reinventing them in a way that’s gonna shift the storytelling structure. It’s f***ing awesome.”

There’s definitely precedence for Marvel to revisit characters like these. The studio recently brought back Peter Billingsly to play William Ginter Riva, a lab tech who only got a few minutes of screen time in the first Iron Man in 2008. Riva returned in Spider-Man: Far From Home, this time as a lackey of Quentin Beck/Mysterio. The studio also had Ben Kinsley and Sam Rockwell reprise their Iron Man trilogy roles as Trevor Slattery and Justin Hammer in the All Hail the King one-shot in 2014.

Marvel was originally planning to debut The Falcon and the Winter Soldier in August. Unfortunately, the coronavirus pandemic derailed its production schedule, forcing Disney+ to remove it from its release calendar. WandaVision will now pick up the baton as the first MCU series to premiere on the streaming service later this year.
