Jonathan Entwistle Will Develop Interconnected Power Rangers Films and TV Series

Last year, Paramount selected Jonathan Entwistle to develop a new Power Rangers movie after inheriting the rights to the series from Lionsgate. Now, eOne is stepping up as the franchise’s new home, and they have bigger plans for the teenagers with attitude. Via The Hollywood Reporter, the studio is planning to launch a new Power Rangers universe spanning both film and TV markets. Entwistle will stay onboard to oversee the development of all these projects.

Entwistle is perhaps best-known for Netflix’s The End of the F***ing World, based on the mini-comics by Charles Forsman. Earlier this year, Entwistle adapted another Forsman comic, I Am Not Okay With This, which also premiered on Netflix. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 outbreak kept that series from getting a second season.

The Power Rangers’ big-screen future was in question after Lionsgate’s theatrical reboot failed to impress audiences in 2017. A year later, Hasbro became the franchise’s new owner, and in late 2019, the company acquired eOne for $4 billion.  The studio will now take a more active role in producing adaptations of Hasbro brands.

“Jonathan has an incredible creative vision for this iconic and hugely successful franchise, and is hands down the right architect to join us as we reimagine the television and film worlds of this property,” said eOne’s film president Nick Meyer and global television president Michael Lombardo in a joint statement. “Across our slate, we are looking forward to working with the most talented storytellers as we take on Hasbro’s rich fan-favourite brands and build entertainment universes around them.”

“This is an unbelievable opportunity to deliver new Power Rangers to both new and existing generations of awaiting and adoring fans,” added Entwistle. “We’ll bring the spirit of analog into the future, harnessing the action and storytelling that made this brand a success.”
