Superman fans may want to keep an eye on Kal-El’s hair. James Gunn has jokingly floated a bizarre visual change for the next chapter, while also teasing a tongue-in-cheek “Blue Cut” of his 2025 Superman movie. The comments quickly sent DC fans into speculation mode.
James Gunn jokes about turning Superman’s hair blue in Man of Tomorrow
James Gunn made the remarks on Threads while discussing Superman: Man of Tomorrow. He wrote that he was bringing the sequel into visual-effects work “to change David’s hair throughout because of accuracy,” referring to David Corenswet’s Superman. He then added, “Look for the Blue Cut of the first movie soon. My apologies.” The playful post does not indicate an actual blue-haired Superman is coming, but it gave fans plenty to joke about.
Gunn’s playful jab comes as the next Superman movie moves closer to the finish line. David Corenswet is back as the Man of Steel, with Rachel Brosnahan returning as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult reprising Lex Luthor. Lars Eidinger is also entering the fray as Brainiac. Gunn has confirmed to Variety that principal photography is complete, and the sequel is currently set for July 9, 2027.
The follow-up is also shaking up the usual hero-villain dynamic. Superman and Luthor will reportedly have to put their differences aside when Brainiac arrives as the bigger threat. So while Luthor may still be a thorn in Superman’s side, the pair could find themselves on the same team when a much bigger threat arrives.
The original Superman launched Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe in theaters on July 11, 2025. The movie follows Clark Kent as he balances his Kryptonian identity with his human life while Lex Luthor manipulates escalating conflicts against him. Corenswet, Brosnahan, and Hoult led a packed ensemble that also included Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Edi Gathegi, and Anthony Carrigan.
Audiences and critics largely welcomed Gunn’s Superman reboot. Rotten Tomatoes currently lists an 83% critics score and 90% audience score, while IMDb gives it 7.0/10. The film also earned about $618.7 million worldwide against an estimated $225 million budget.
