Godzilla vs. Kong Director to Helm Event Horizon Remake for Amazon

Amazon is hoping to strike TV gold once again by updating one of the ’90s less promising sci-fi offerings. According to The Wrap, the streaming service is planning to re-imagine Event Horizon as a TV series.

Adam Wingard will direct and executive produce the venture for Amazon. Currently, Wingard is sitting in the director’s chair on Godzilla vs. Kong, which is still roaring into theaters next spring. He’ll presumably transition over to Event Horizon after post-production on that film has been completed. Wingard has previously helmed other horror features including Death Note, Blair Witch, and You’re Next. He last worked in the TV realm when he directed the pilot episode for Cinemax’s Outcast; which was based on Robert Kirkman’s comic of the same name.

The original Event Horizon was directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and starred Laurence Fishburne, Sam Neill, and Kathleen Quinlan. It was set in the year 2047, as a team of astronauts intercepted a spaceship that was missing for seven years. Once aboard, they learn that the ship’s gravity drive ripped a hole in the space-time continuum. That opened up a gateway to a parallel universe, and allowed something dangerous to come through.

Event Horizon was poorly received by critics when it arrived in theaters in the summer of 1997. Despite this, it has found some semblance of cult status on home video over the years.
