Throughout this season of d Supergirl, Manchester Black and the Girl of Steel have had an uneasy relationship. While they both oppose Agent Liberty’s anti-alien agenda, Black’s willingness to kill has alienated Supergirl. She simply can’t trust him, and she considers him to be a murderer. As for Black, he views Supergirl as dangerously naive, and his story is far from over. In the first promo from Supergirl episode 4.13, Black is out of prison and he’s assembled his own team: the Elite!
The name of the episode is “What’s So Funny ‘Bout Truth, Justice, and the American Way?, which shares its title with the classic issue, Action Comics #775. In that comic, Joe Kelly and Doug Mahnke introduced the Elite as DC’s answer to The Authority. At the time, Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch’s The Authority was revolutionizing the industry with its team of amoral heroes and high caliber action. Using the Elite allowed Kelly and Mahnke to offer their critique about The Authority within Superman’s anniversary issue. Essentially, the Elite dismissed Superman’s brand of justice as too soft on criminals. In response, Superman showed the Elite what it would look like if he was also amoral.
Supergirl‘s take on the concept only has three members of the Elite: Manchester Black, Menagerie, and The Hat. Her so-called “super friends” actually outnumber this version of the Elite. But surely Black has a few tricks up his sleeve.
