New MCU Shows Are Coming, But There’s a Reason for Marvel’s Silence

Marvel’s Disney+ future isn’t dead, and one insider’s panicked text message proves it. A new report reveals why Marvel Studios deliberately stayed silent at D23 and what major projects are actually brewing behind the scenes for the streamer.

New report confirms Marvel is not abandoning Disney+ after Daredevil: Born Again

Puck reports that Marvel Studios has several live-action series in active development for Disney+. The outlet confirms the studio plans to announce these upcoming projects in the near future.

These new shows will likely incorporate X-Men characters slated to appear in Avengers: Doomsday next year. Marvel is also building out its roster with fresh faces like Nova, currently in active development. The report notes these efforts may “bleed into the streamer’s franchise strategy” beyond the theatrical universe.

Disney’s D23 event notably lacked any fresh Marvel television announcements for the streaming platform though. One executive texted the outlet on Sunday, “I guess our plan is just Spider-Man!” while half-joking. October’s VisionQuest stands as the sole new Marvel series on Disney+’s current release calendar right now.

The superhero genre faces mounting pressure across all major streaming platforms at this stage. DC quietly shelved two promised series, Waller and Paradise Lost, according to a report from The Ankler. Peacemaker became the first DCU show to crack Nielsen’s top 10 but is not moving forward with a third season. Amazon also canceled Gen V due to production costs despite its 90 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and strong debut numbers.

Daredevil: Born Again’s second season scored an impressive 86 percent audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Yet the critically praised Marvel title never appeared on Nielsen’s originals chart despite its strong scores. The report notes that acclaimed superhero shows consistently fail to draw new audiences beyond existing subscribers.

Disney also quietly reversed its renewal decision for Wonder Man without offering any public explanation. HBO’s Lanterns debuted this week starring Kyle Chandler and has already earned sterling reviews from critics. The series could test whether superhero content still has the ability to attract wider mainstream audiences.
