Will Lanterns Get a Season 2? Latest Renewal Update Makes Things Clear

Lanterns Season 2 is already taking shape, and it hasn’t even been renewed yet. Showrunner Chris Mundy shared where things stand with the potential second season and what fans can expect going forward.

Lanterns Season 2 already taking shape ahead of renewal

Lanterns showrunner Chris Mundy revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that season two planning is already underway. Mundy and Halt and Catch Fire co-creator Christopher Cantwell are currently breaking story for a potential second season. HBO has not officially renewed the series yet.

Mundy confirmed the early development stage during a wide-ranging interview about the show’s creative process. He stated, “We’re about six weeks into laying out a season, and then we’ll talk to folks about it really soon.” Co-creators Damon Lindelof and Tom King are unavailable for season two due to other commitments. Lindelof is leading The Chain while King is helming Mister Miracle.

The showrunner expressed measured confidence about the prospect of renewal without taking anything for granted. He explained, “You have to go forward with total confidence as if it’s going to happen. If it doesn’t happen, you also have to not be heartbroken.” Mundy added that the team plans to tell the story “in a slightly different way, so that it feels fresh, with characters you know and care about.”

Mundy also discussed James Gunn’s hands-off approach during the first season’s development. He noted that Gunn was busy making Superman and largely trusted the creative team with the show. Mundy shared, “We knew we were putting John on his feet, but there wasn’t an actual story point that we had to land him on. We weren’t shoehorned into anything at all.” Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart will appear in Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow.

The eight-episode first season currently airs new episodes on HBO every Sunday through October 4. Critical reception has been strong, and Mundy hopes audience viewership numbers will match that enthusiasm. The team remains in breaking-story stages with no scripts written yet.
