Lanterns Just Dropped a DCEU Batman Villain Easter Egg Most Fans Missed

Lanterns appears to have slipped a subtle Batman reference into its premiere, giving DC fans another detail to examine. A brief appearance tied to Janus Cosmetics has drawn attention because of its connection to the character Roman Sionis, better known as Black Mask. As of now, the series has not confirmed that the classic Batman villain will appear in the DCU.

Lanterns might have set up a classic villain for DCU’s Batman after DCEU death

A Janus Cosmetics advertisement in the Lanterns premiere may have introduced a connection to Roman Sionis, the DC Comics villain better known as Black Mask.

The poster appears near the end of the episode behind John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre. Janus Cosmetics is one of the companies associated with Sionis in the comics, making the brief appearance notable for the DCU’s future Batman plans. The series has not confirmed that Sionis will appear, but the reference could point toward his introduction in a later project.

In the comics, Roman Sionis was originally a wealthy businessman who inherited his family’s fortune and eventually drove the family company into bankruptcy. Wayne Enterprises later acquired the struggling business, which contributed to Sionis’ growing resentment toward Bruce Wayne. His fixation on masks eventually became part of his transformation into Black Mask, leading him into Gotham’s criminal underworld.

Black Mask has appeared in previous live-action DC projects. Ewan McGregor portrayed Roman Sionis in the DCEU movie Birds of Prey and did not appear in the franchise again following the character’s death at the end of the film. Peter Outerbridge also played the character in Batwoman.

Lanterns stars Kyle Chandler as veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as a newly recruited John Stewart. The two are assigned to investigate a murder in Nebraska, taking them into a small town where the case exposes dangerous secrets. Created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, the series premiered on August 16, 2026. It will consist of eight episodes that will be released weekly through October 4.
