Avengers: Doomsday Trailer Sees Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom Forever Change the MCU

Marvel Studios has released a new Avengers: Doomsday trailer following its D23 Expo panel. Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom unleashes his wrath in the new footage, setting the stage for a major MCU conflict. The new footage arrives less than a month after the first trailer was shown at CinemaCon. Like the exclusive footage shown at San Diego Comic-Con, the latest Doomsday trailer features plenty of action-packed material.

The ensemble will bring together the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men as they face a multiversal threat. Downey Jr. plays Doctor Doom, marking the villain’s major MCU appearance. Marvel will follow up Doomsday with Avengers: Secret Wars, capping off the Multiverse Saga.

What is known about Avengers: Doomsday

While the first teaser focused on character interactions and battles in the film, the new footage goes deeper into the story. Fans get to see more bombastic action, as expected from an MCU film directed by the Russo brothers. It also offers more insight into the story and Robert Downey Jr.’s take on the iconic supervillain. The footage also features multiversal action involving heroes from different universes.

The upcoming film will feature several actors from the original X-Men films of the early 2000s. It remains unclear whether they are playing the same versions of their characters from those films or new variants.

Doomsday is expected to set the stage for Avengers: Secret Wars, which draws inspiration from Jonathan Hickman’s Secret Wars comic-book storyline. In that storyline, Doctor Doom emerges victorious and creates Battleworld, where he rules over the surviving heroes and factions.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to release on December 18, 2026.
