Marvel recently explained the return of a fan-favorite villain in the X-Men ’97 Season 2 finale. In the post-credits scene of the episode, the character makes their much-awaited return and helps set up the third chapter.
How Mystique returned in X-Men ’97 Season 2 finale
Jake Castorena, the supervising producer on X-Men ’97, explained Mystique’s return in the post-credits scene of the Season 2 finale. The shape-shifting mutant appears in the guise of the National Security Advisor Valerie Cooper, browsing through her own file. When the real Valerie walks into the room, Mystique kills her. The series strongly implies that she will continue to impersonate Valerie. This will likely set her on the path to a reunion with her mutant-hating son, Graydon Creed, who has become the President of the United States of America.
Castorena told ScreenRant that Mystique’s voice actress, Randall Carpenter, “was game from the get-go” to reprise the role after over three decades. “That’s the best part about a lot of our legacy cast that we are able to reach out to,” Castorena explained. “They want to play! It’s like, ‘Oh hell yeah, I’m back in, let’s go.’ And the best part about her voicing Mystique again is that she’s like, ‘These are old shoes.’ It’s just so great watching our legacy cast just fall right back into that groove,” he added. Notably, Carpenter voiced Mystique in multiple episodes of the original X-Men series.
Castorena then teased Mystique’s involvement in the upcoming season. “You’ll just have to watch season 3 to see if she does become as prominent of a character as people may or may not hope or ponder,” he elaborated. “I’m answering the question without really answering the question; I’m aware,” Castorena added. He then assured the Mystique fans that whatever happens in Season 3, it will not disappoint them.
Marvel plans to release X-Men ’97 Season 3 sometime in 2027.
