Brandon Sanderson just dropped a major Mistborn movie update, but fans might want to temper their excitement. The bestselling fantasy author shared new details about the film’s progress, along with a surprising caveat, in his latest weekly video.
Brandon Sanderson finishes Mistborn screenplay, but cautions movie is still early
Brandon Sanderson recently confirmed he finished the first draft of the Mistborn screenplay. The popular fantasy author shared the update during his weekly YouTube video on August 12. He also cautioned fans that the project remains in its early stages.
Sanderson stated he will now gather feedback on the completed draft. He expects the script to undergo at least three more revisions before reaching its final form. Apple TV announced the Mistborn film adaptation back in February 2026. The project has moved at a notable pace since that initial announcement.
Meanwhile, Sanderson revealed he has shifted his focus back to the Ghostbloods novel. He aims to complete the second draft of Ghostbloods book one by late August or early September. The author noted the book still lacks an official title.
Beyond the Mistborn film, Sanderson also has a Stormlight Archive TV series in development with Apple TV. That adaptation will span ten episodes. The Stormlight Archive currently consists of five main novels. These include The Way of Kings, Words of Radiance, Oathbringer, Rhythm of War, and Wind and Truth.
The Mistborn book trilogy centers on Vin, a young thief who allies with rebel leader Kelsier. Together, they work to overthrow the Lord Ruler, an immortal tyrant who has controlled their world for a millennium. Plot details for the film adaptation remain completely under wraps at this time. Fans remain hopeful that Sanderson’s direct involvement will ensure a faithful adaptation of the source material.
No official release date has been announced for the Mistborn film yet. Industry speculation suggests the movie likely will not arrive until 2029 at the earliest. Sanderson’s weekly update also covered upcoming author events and his collaboration with subscription box service Illumicrate for Fires of December.
