House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal explained why Rhaenyra revealed Aegon the Conqueror’s prophecy to the common folk in an interview with Variety. The Season 3 finale featured Rhaenyra telling the people of King’s Landing about the whitewalkers threat. She also declared herself the “prince that was promised” before a crowd that reacted with shock and fear.
Notably, the prophecy originates from Aegon the Conqueror’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” vision about the Targaryens defeating the White Walkers. As a result, this moment marks a significant departure from George R.R. Martin’s source material, Fire & Blood. Furthermore, the scene connects directly to the original Game of Thrones series, where this prophecy played a central role.
However, Condal acknowledged the scene does not appear in Martin’s book. “It’s not in the book, and it’s not in the history, but there is a bunch of talk about how Rhaenyra became very despotic,” he said. Additionally, he noted that historians in the story’s world would dismiss it as typical Targaryen behavior. “My glib toss-off from the historians is, ‘Oh, well, Targaryens say crazy shit all the time,'” Condal explained.
Meanwhile, the showrunner pointed out that common people watching the speech would lack the context viewers possess. “For the stonemasons standing there in the crowd just looking up at this, it could just sound like somebody trying to make something of themselves,” Condal said. He also emphasized that this self-aggrandizement defines much of Targaryen existence throughout the story’s universe.
Ultimately, Condal revealed the writers specifically designed the scene to shift Rhaenyra’s dynamic with her subjects before Season 4. The team wanted “a real seismic change, a sea change in Rhaenyra’s relationship to her people,” he said.
Rhaenyra stands outside the church of her subjects’ faith as a follower of “this old Valyrian faith of dragons and fire gods and blood magic.” She then pronounces herself “this chosen one, the leader that is going to take them through the fire and out of the darkness.”
