Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s climax unfolds on Roosevelt Island at the Department of Damage Control’s facility. Bill Metzger holds Jean Grey captive to finish experiments that previously killed her sister Sara Grey. The organization had used Sara’s telepathic powers to mind control the Hand before the experiments took her life.

Jean discovers her sister’s dying thought etched into a tattered vent reading “V-Max” above her cell. The trauma triggers Jean’s mutation to expand far beyond its initial 30-foot range. She controls a huge section of Manhattan with telekinesis, holding everybody in place.

Frank Castle urges Peter to use violence against Jean, but Peter chooses empathy instead.
