The director behind one of 2024’s biggest hits might be joining the MCU. Luca Guadagnino, whose DC project Sgt. Rock never materialized, is now reportedly being pursued by Marvel Studios for an MCU film.
Marvel rumored to want Luca Guadagnino for an MCU movie
Marvel Studios reportedly wants acclaimed filmmaker Luca Guadagnino to direct an MCU movie, according to insider MyTimeToShineHello on X. The scooper posted that “Marvel is trying to get Luca Guadagnino to direct a movie for them.” The specific project remains unknown at this time.
Guadagnino previously expressed interest in directing a Spider-Man film starring Andrew Garfield. He shared this desire during an appearance at the Marrakech Film Festival in December 2024. “I remember when Sam Raimi directed his first one, and I was 28 or 29, I had these dreams because I’m kind of a megalomaniac, and I wished I had been asked to do one. So I wish I had directed [Garfield] in Spider-Man,” Guadagnino said during the event, as reported by Variety.
Garfield played Peter Parker in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man and its 2014 sequel. He later reprised the role in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home alongside Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland. Guadagnino and Garfield have since collaborated on After the Hunt, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2025.
The Italian director built a reputation for emotionally complex and visually striking films. His 2024 film Challengers grossed over $90 million worldwide and earned widespread critical acclaim. He also directed Queer starring Daniel Craig, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival that same year. DC Studios also tapped Guadagnino to direct Sgt. Rock with Colin Farrell in the lead role. However, scheduling issues derailed the project, and Guadagnino departed the film.
Guadagnino currently has the film Artificial in post-production, which stars Andrew Garfield and Yura Borisov. The film dramatizes the brief dismissal of Sam Altman as CEO of OpenAI. Neon acquired global distribution rights after Amazon dropped the project in June 2026. If the Marvel rumor proves true, Guadagnino would bring a distinct auteur sensibility to the franchise.
