Most critics found Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 enjoyable overall but flawed in some areas.
LeisureByte‘s Archi Sengupta said that the sophomore outing is “a noticeable improvement” from Season 1. She shared that this is primarily due to the “original storytelling and fantastic performances” keeping viewers emotionally invested.
In her review, she called it “a great adaptation that is both entertaining and emotionally grounded.” Highlighting the expanded cast and backstories, which dive deeper into the lore, she acknowledged that Season 2 isn’t “perfect.” She found it captivating nonetheless.
Meanwhile, Screen Rant‘s Lewis Glazebrook shared in his review that it didn’t surpass the source material, a.k.a. the fan-favorite animated series. However, he noted that it is still “well-made, mostly well-acted, and infectiously enjoyable.”
He added that the show suffered from some “missteps,” including the mandated shorter episode count. Nevertheless, it still did what many iconic adaptations struggled to do: “Standing on its own two feet as a story worth telling in a new medium, not floundering as a shameless cash grab.”
Rollin Bishop of GamesRadar+ wrote that Season 2 struggled to adapt the source material. However, he said it skillfully handled “major character beats” for characters like Zuko. Harboring mixed feelings, they added that the second entry surpassed the previous one in many areas. However, it suffered in some, painting a “concerning future.”
Diana Keng of TV Fanatic wrote, “Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 takes us through a rollercoaster of emotion, action, and conflict.” She praised the visual effects, saying they offered “the fantastical backdrop to very understandable challenges within the Gaang as well as between them and a nearly overwhelming catalog of antagonists.”
However, she took some issue with the characterization. Keng shared, “It’s hard to feel good about a season that exposes every character’s vulnerability without a strategy to shore it up.”
But Why Tho?‘s LaNeysha Campbell shared that while Season 2 isn’t “perfect,” it is an improvement. She added that it delivers “an impressive continuation that pays homage to the source material while also enriching its story and characters.”
