Fresh reports suggest Marvel’s upcoming X-Men reboot will leave its most iconic mutant off the roster entirely. The film’s director and writers are already mapping out a bold new direction for the franchise, but one fan-favourite appears to have no place in their plans — at least for now.
Why Wolverine may not appear in Marvel’s X-Men reboot movie
Scooper MyTimeToShineHello claimed on X that Wolverine is absent from the current MCU X-Men reboot script, stating: “I hear Wolverine isn’t in the current draft for MCU’s X-Men movie.”
This follows older reporting from Daniel RPK, who stated: “I hear the current treatment for the MCU X-Men reboot does not include Wolverine, at all.” Both reports align with a rumour that first surfaced in September 2023.
That earlier report came from scooper CanWeGetSomeToast, who made the same claim over a year before the latest wave of reporting. Daniel RPK had also offered a reason tied to Hugh Jackman’s ongoing MCU presence following Deadpool & Wolverine’s massive box office success. He stated: “[The] Rest of the team is similar to the X-Men ’97 cartoon plus some. But no Wolverine because Hugh Jackman is sticking around for now. Likely even post Secret Wars.”
Hugh Jackman will next suit up as Wolverine in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Henry Cavill has already played a version of the character, appearing briefly as a Wolverine variant dubbed “Cavillrine” in Deadpool & Wolverine.
CanWeGetSomeToast separately pointed to a comics-based reason for the absence. Wolverine was not part of the original X-Men lineup in the source material. The account stated: “The Weapon X program has to be formed before Wolverine joins the team, and Adamantium JUST appeared in the MCU.”
Meanwhile, director Jake Schreier confirmed the reboot is actively in development. Beef creator Lee Sung Jin and The Bear co-showrunner Joanna Calo are now writing the script. Schreier told Collider he wants the film to explore “the less-trodden path,” praising both writers for their “ability to take these very small interpersonal dynamics and explode them onto this much larger canvas.”
