Buffy Star Explains New Series’ Title & Release Date Delay

Updates on the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer series may have been few and far between so far, and star Sarah Michelle Gellar has now divulged the reason behind its uncertain release schedule. In a recent interview, Gellar shed some light on the much-awaited series, confirming that it won’t be a sequel, while also explaining the prolonged delay to its release.

Sarah Michelle Gellar explains why new Buffy the Vampire Slayer series is called New Sunnydale

During her recent appearance on the Shut Up Evan podcast, Sarah Michelle Gellar discussed the new Buffy series with host Evan Ross Katz and disclosed that the show will expand upon the events of the original series rather than being a simple reboot.

“It’s not a sequel, it’s not a reboot — it’s a continuation,” Gellar stated.

Talking about the plot of the new Buffy series, the 48-year-old actress noted that the series will explore where the titular vampire hunter “is now in this world and what is this world that Buffy lives in, with her and without her.” She also shed light on why the show is titled New Sunnydale, stating, “It’s not a reboot, it’s not picking up with all of the same characters right away. It is not like a sequel… That’s why the name was even important to me — ‘Buffy: New Sunnydale.’ It’s Buffy, but it’s also something else.”

Gellar then explained why New Sunnydale has been in production for so long, saying, “I know this seems like it’s taking a long time, and it’s because, unless we are sure that it is exactly what we set out to do and that it makes sense to do it, we don’t want to sell you the legacy by not. When I know it’s perfect, then it will be out there, but I won’t do it unless I know it can be that.”
