Zootopia 2 Is Very Different From Its First Version, Reveals Star

Ginnifer Goodwin addressed a major change in Zootopia 2 following the film’s release. The star revealed that the sequel originally featured a significant time jump. However, the filmmakers ultimately chose a different direction for the story.

Ginnifer Goodwin explains the difference betwen original and theatrical versions of Zootopia 2

Ginnifer Goodwin explained that an earlier version of Zootopia 2 featured a significant time jump. “Originally, we had recorded a version that began years later, and a lot of the change and [character] growth was off-camera.” The filmmakers ultimately scrapped this version because they were concerned about character development occurring off-screen.

Speaking during the Los Angeles press day for Zootopia 2, Goodwin said, “There’s always like the story that we’re going to tell, but yes, there’s different iterations of that. And there was a version of the story that was going to pick up a couple of years after the end of the first story.” The creative team decided against this approach because it “was too much time for change and growth off camera to have happened.”

Goodwin emphasized the benefit of picking up directly after the first film: “It makes a lot more sense to bring the audience with us on the ride and experience the letdown of Nick and Judy have just saved the city, but what’s that hangover like?” She added, “And going with her on that ride starting a week later I think was a really genius move.”

The final version of Zootopia 2 begins shortly after the events of the first film. Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde are now working as partners in the Zootopia Police Department. The plot escalates quickly when snake sightings trigger an investigation. This leads to a deeper conspiracy about the city’s founding.

Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Idris Elba, and Shakira return to voice their original characters. Ke Huy Quan, Fortune Feimster, Andy Samberg, David Straithairn, Patrick Warburton, and Quinta Brunson join the cast as new additions.

Disney released the film in theaters on November 26, 2025.
