Doctor Strange 3 Rumor Brings Good & Bad News

New information has surfaced about one of Marvel’s most anticipated future projects as discussions around Doctor Strange’s next solo film gain renewed attention. A recent update outlines the mixed developments circulating behind the scenes, clarifying what may move forward and what may not as Doctor Strange 3 enters its earliest stages.

Doctor Strange 3 begins early development, to have a new director

Doctor Strange 3 has entered early development at Marvel Studios, according to Nexus Point News. The update arrives three years after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness released, marking the first significant movement on the character’s next solo chapter since 2022. The report states that Marvel is preparing to hire a new director for the upcoming installment.

When Marvel announced the second film, the studio attached Scott Derrickson to return and described the project as the MCU’s first “true horror experience.” Early information indicated that Doctor Strange and Wanda Maximoff would share the narrative focus. Derrickson left in early 2020 due to “creative differences,” and Marvel brought in Sam Raimi to direct while Loki writer Michael Waldron revised the script. The COVID-19 pandemic caused filming delays and forced adjustments to the production schedule.

Elizabeth Olsen said Marvel informed her “three weeks before filming” that Wanda would serve as the primary antagonist. She explained that she expected the story to continue the arc established in WandaVision. Raimi and Waldron introduced major story revisions during production. The film ends by introducing Clea, played by Charlize Theron, in a final scene that sets up Strange’s next mission.

Nexus Point News reports that Benedict Cumberbatch “is becoming more involved behind the scenes” as development begins. The outlet states he is taking part in discussions about the new writer and director. He reportedly has interest in Sam Mendes, though the report notes Mendes is working on four Beatles biopics.

The report says Marvel does not expect Sam Raimi or Michael Waldron to return for the third installment. It adds that Doctor Strange 3 will not begin production until Avengers: Secret Wars finishes filming.
