Matt Duffer opened up about how one of Stranger Things’ youngest characters will play a surprising new role in the show’s fifth and final season. The co-creator revealed that Holly Wheeler will take on greater significance in the story, hinting that her involvement connects deeply to the show’s early themes and tone.
Matt Duffer explains why Holly Wheeler is important in Stranger Things Season 5
Matt Duffer addressed Holly Wheeler’s expanded role in Stranger Things Season 5 during a recent interview with SFX Magazine (via GamesRadar).
He explained that Holly, played by twins Anniston and Tinsley Price, will be “a centerpiece” in the final season, which shifts part of the focus to a younger generation. “Once you see the full season, you’ll have a better understanding of why it was so important to add her to the cast,” Duffer said.
Duffer stated that the decision to elevate Holly came from a desire to “recapture some of the feeling of season one.” He explained, “Some of that you can’t recapture unless you have kids, because our kids are not kids anymore. They’re not close to being kids anymore.” Bringing Holly and her classmates into the story, he added, allowed the team to reintroduce that early-season innocence and wonder to the darker tone of the upcoming finale.
He also revealed that the concept of expanding Holly’s role wasn’t part of the original plan. “Season 2 was really when we saw that the show was a success and that it would probably go on for a few seasons,” Duffer explained. “That’s when we started to really break down the mythology and start to roughly plan it out.” He noted that as the story evolved, so did the characters’ importance.
Duffer added, “Even something like Holly being a centerpiece of this season—that was a discovery as we were breaking season five. You always want to allow room for things to change and evolve and grow.”
Stranger Things Season 5 will premiere in three parts: November 26, 2025; Christmas Day; and December 31.
