James Gunn recently spoke about Blue Beetle’s future in the DC Universe, offering clarification after his earlier comments sparked widespread fan speculation. He hinted at plans for the character’s next appearance but withheld specific details.
James Gunn clarifies Blue Beetle cameo comment about Peacemaker
During a Season 2 finale watch party on Threads, Peacemaker creator and DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn addressed the topic directly, saying, “I never said Blue Beetle was going to be there. I said people might be in luck who want to see Blue Beetle again.” His comment hinted that Xolo Maridueña’s character will return in future DCU projects, but did not appear in the recent Peacemaker Season 2 finale.
The clarification came after fans misinterpreted Gunn’s earlier remarks as a hint that Blue Beetle would appear in the finale. Xolo Maridueña first played Jaime Reyes in Blue Beetle (2023). The new DC Universe now includes the film in its continuity.
Gunn also responded to the mixed reactions surrounding Peacemaker’s Season 2 finale, which divided audiences over its character-driven focus and limited action sequences. “Not everyone can love everything. I love the episode but I understand that not everyone does which is completely fair,” he said.
When asked about claims that the finale lacked major surprises, Gunn noted that several major reveals were present. “I don’t get that people don’t think there aren’t big reveals here, including Checkmate and Salvation,” he explained, referring to organizations expected to play a role in upcoming DCU storylines.
Gunn dismissed the fan theory that A.R.G.U.S. agent Langston Fleury was Martian Manhunter. He also explained that Rick Flag Sr.’s actions stem from fear rather than hatred, saying, “Rick doesn’t hate metahumans. He’s afraid of the power some metahumans have dictating world politics… and mostly afraid of how difficult it is to contain metahuman criminals.”
