Piece by piece, the Absolute Universe setting is slowly growing. The earliest issues slowly built up the world around Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. Various supporting characters appeared in these comics, hinting at the eventual establishment of a Justice League in this reality. One such hero just appeared in Absolute Wonder Woman. However, in this universe, they are being set up as an antagonist for the last of the Amazons.

Written by Kelly Thompson, with art by Hayden Sherman, Absolute Wonder Woman #12 concludes Diana’s adventures in a literal labyrinth. Known as The Maze, this labyrinth was part of a larger facility known as Area 41, which was used to contain metahumans and magical creatures. Diana traveled into the facility, seeking another Amazon, who she was told was being held there.

Beyond rescuing the Amazon Io, Diana also frees many other beings trapped within the Maze. This greatly displeases Veronica Cale, who is director of the government agency that oversees Area 41 in the Absolute Universe. In retaliation, Cale goes into the deepest intact dungeon, seeking out a familiar character.
What Justice League member just appeared in the Absolute Universe?
The final page of Absolute Wonder Woman #12 reveals that Cale’s target is the Absolute Universe version of Zatanna. She is bound and muzzled like Hannibal Lecter, presumably to keep her from using her magic against her handlers. It is Cale’s intention to turn Zatanna against the Absolute Universe Wonder Woman, who is more witch than warrior.

In the main DC Universe, Zatanna is one of Earth’s powerful magicians. This is apparently also true in the Absolute Universe, if Cale thinks she is capable of fighting Wonder Woman. However, it is also apparent that Zatanna is far from a willing participant in Cale’s agenda. Even ignoring Diana’s history of turning enemies into allies, it seems this new Ultimate Zatanna will not be antagonizing Wonder Woman for long.
Absolute Wonder Woman #12 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
