Hwang Dong-hyuk clarifies why Jun-hee’s baby won Squid Game Season 3

Squid Game has finally wrapped up with its third and final season. Following a rollercoaster ride of emotions, the viewers see the final winner of the game at the end, who is Jun-hee’s newborn baby, Player 222.

The baby comes in as a replacement after Jun-hee’s death. During the final round of the last game, the game of towers, Player 222, Gi-hun, and Myung-gi are the last ones left to compete. However, after Myung-gi falls to his death before the final round of the game officially starts, the rules of the game result in a scenario where either Gi-hun or the baby must die for the other to survive and for the game to end. So, Gi-hun makes the ultimate sacrifice and jumps off the tower, making the baby the winner of Squid Game Season 3.

While speaking to Tudum recently, director Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed why the baby wins the games. He described the baby as a symbol of “humanity and conscience” for Gi-hun. Dong-hyuk said, “I eventually came to believe that, no matter how hopeless and dark the world may seem, perhaps we still have a chance if we can find even a glimpse of hope within ourselves.”

The director also alluded to the baby being a symbol of hope. He added, “Rather than seeking something from or in others, I hope we can reflect on our own values and whether we have faith in ourselves, so we can build on the good within us. That’s the takeaway I hope viewers will have after watching Season 3.”
