Alternate Thunderbolts* concept art designs reveal surprising Sentry suits
John Staub, senior illustrator at Marvel Studios, took to Instagram to share various early concept art designs for the Sentry in Thunderbolts*. This includes a suit without a cape and one with combat uniform coloring. “Early costume concepts for #sentry for the #thunderbolts #newavengers film. One of my initial passes was leaning towards a more military fatigues. As the story evolved they so did our concepts,” Staub wrote in the caption, “Really fun exploring these possibilities,” he added.
The character, created by writer Paul Jenkins and artist Jae Lee, made his first appearance in The Sentry #1 comic book, published in 2000. Since then, the character has become an important part of Marvel Comics’ expanding fictional universe.
In an earlier update shared on May 21, Staub posted the “approved” design for the character. In the caption, he mentioned that he “had the thankful opportunity of helping bring this character to the big screen. Led by the amazing @andyparkart [Andy Park], director of visual development.”
Jake Schreier directed Thunderbolts* from a script by Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo. Since its release, the movie has garnered predominantly positive responses from the critics and currently has an 88% approval rating on the review aggregating site Rotten Tomatoes. It reportedly had a production budget of $180 million and made around $379 million at the global box office.
Notably, Pullman will return as Robert “Bob” Reynolds / Sentry / Void in Avengers: Doomsday, slated to release on December 18, 2026.
